The operational problem
Manufacturer range is not an operating answer.
Payload, cold weather, stop density, road mix and charging access move real consumption substantially. Fleets buy, allocate and dispatch vehicles against a published figure that was never measured under their conditions — and find out on the road.
The same suitability question applies to a diesel or petrol vehicle: payload, dimensions, working hours and clean air zone compliance decide whether it can do the job. For an electric vehicle, range and charging are further factors layered on top — and the factors where published figures are least reliable.

What makes it defensible
The asset is the accumulating record of predicted versus observed missions — how a specific vehicle behaves under a specific payload, temperature, route and duty cycle. Interfaces can be copied; that evidence cannot be bought or published by a manufacturer.
